How Scheme of Work and Lesson Planner works.
The following information intended to give a flavour of the features and functions found in web-based SoWaLP. To see the application in action, simply register for a conference call demonstration of the full product.
Unlike many institution-wide applications, SoWaLP is easy to implement. Populating the application with the initial institutional data (course programme, staff details, etc) is a one-off activity which we can assist with if required.
When the base data is present, the system is easy to use and intuitive in its style and layout. The figure below shows the stages of use. Continual improvement is built into the cyclical process as shown.
The application incorporates a range of user access levels which determine the features available to different types of user. The highest user level - system administration - has access to all areas of the system enabling them to set-up new users, courses, etc.
Other User levels include senior manager, team/curriculum manager, lecturer/teacher/trainer, and guest.
Each user has his or her own dashboard which provides access to the features associated with their user level.
The figure below shows the features available to a 'practitioner' level ie, a user limited to entering and modifying their own lesson plans and associated details.

The system can be a set-up to provide the level of flexibility or rigor that you choose to adopt. A rigorous set-up would take full advantage of the user level system in order to limit the activities available to various levels. A flexible system would reduce the spread of user levels so that each user could make modifications to the course structure, etc. The choice of set-up would almost certainly be linked to the size of the establishment using the application. There is no limit to the number of users who can use the system other than the licence agreement limits the use of SoWaLP to a single establishment (multi-site colleges, etc, count as a single establishment).
Web-based SoWaLP uses a methodology based on the principle features of Bloom's Taxonomy of Learning Domains with particular emphasis on the use of 'learning objectives' as the basis of effective lesson planning. SoWaLP provides a framework for lesson planning which is transparent across an institution as a whole.
Centralised student data and timetabling has been a reality for a number of years. Now - using web-based SoWaLP - curriculum delivery planning and evaluation can be handled centrally using a web-based management system.
